The Oronogo Duenweg Mining Belt (ODMB) Superfund site is in the Tri-State Mining District (TSMD), where lead and zinc mining, milling, and smelting began in the mid-1800s and continued for more than 100 years. Over time, these activities impacted soil, groundwater, surface water, and sediment at the site. The main contaminants are lead, zinc, and cadmium. EPA added the site to the Superfund National Priorities List on August 30, 1990.
This cleanup action will address soil impacted by past mining activity at 10 residential properties. These properties were identified as a priority for this cleanup action through coordination with the local and state health departments and the EPA remedial program.
On July 27, 2026, EPA and its contractors began work to remove the contaminated soil. The cleanup includes digging up lead-contaminated soil, replacing it with clean soil, and restoring the yard surface to match the way it looked before work began, such as with grass or gravel. The removed soil will be taken to an approved repository for disposal. Work is projected to be completed by late October 2026.
