The Old Salem Tannery Site was a tannery in operation from the late 1800's until 1973. From 1973 until 1993, the land was used as an industrial storage facility and a lead reclamation operation. In 1993, the EPA Region III Removal Program performed a removal action at the Site which included the removal of drums and containers of hazardous waste.

In April of 2004, EPA was again contacted regarding the Site. Since the cleanup in the mid 1990s, the property has been used as a truck and vehicle salvage yard.

A windshield assessment performed by EPA, VDEM, and VADEQ revealed the presence of approximately 100 drums and containers
