The increasing demand for Lithium-ion batteries (LiB) has resulted in larger volumes and greater capacities of batteries and maritime shipments. According to S&P Global, “the number of reported container ship fires increased in 2022 from 31 to 65.” The science of LiB is nascent and emergency response, control, and coordination is working to catch up to a constantly changing risk.

The Port of San Francisco in coordination with the US Environmental Protection Agency is sponsoring a LiB Training and Discussion-based exercise on July 11, 2024. The exercise will provide participants with an opportunity to assess capabilities, plans, policies, and procedures for managing LiB fires at piers and at sea. The expected outcome of the exercise is to develop interagency planning, operational coordination, and greater capability within the Response and recovery Mission sets.
