Approximately 4000 gallons of diesel was spilled from an above ground storage tank (AST) at the RGIS World Headquarters at 2000 E. Taylor Street, Auburn Hills, Oakland County, MI. RGIS is a company that provides inventory services for grocery stores across the United States. A diesel-fueled backup generator on-site is used to keep operations up and running during power outages. The generator is fueled by a 1000 gallon below ground storage tank which is fed by a 5000 gallon AST. A switch malfunctioned overnight and the contents of the 5000 gallon tank were pumped into the 1000 gallon below ground storage tank, resulting in a spill of 4000 gallons of diesel fuel into the RGIS parking lot. The spill entered the on-site storm sewer system and flowed into an on-site retention pond. The pond has an outfall to a small creek which is a tributary to the Clinton River.
