On May 14, 2006, the Providence RI Fire Department responded to a report of a mercury spill at the RI School of Design. The amount of mercury was reported to be the size of a golf ball. No injuries were repored, but the Fire Department evacuated the building. The RI DEM was responding. Intitial air readings using the Lumex detected up to 50,000 ng/m3 in the air at the door of the building. At 2015 hrs, the Fire Department requested EPA's assistance and OSC Mike Barry responded with the START team. On May 15, 2006 - OSC Elise Jakabhazy relieved OSC Barry and functioned in unified command throughout the rest of the emergency response phase.
