The Redlands Shooting Club (RSC) is a skeet range that lies adjacent to the Santa Ana River Woolystar Preserve and the Santa Ana River. The Preserve and the River at the home of three ESA species: Woolystar (plant), Slender Horned Spine Flower and the San Bernardino Kangaroo Rat. The RSC has been in operation since the mid-1960s and has been overshooting the range property peppering the Preserve and the river with lead shot. The site was discovered when the RSC owners hired a scrap metal company to recover the lead shot from the Preserve and River. During this operation, done without compliance with the ESA, habitat for the Woolystar was apparently damaged leading to an investigation by USFWS. Due to the lead issues, USFWS called in EPA CID for assistance. CID notified ERS. Samples collected by CID indicate the presence of percentage levels of lead and antimony and high concentrations of arsenic. The ERS is currently planning an assessment of the river and the Preserve in cooperation with USFWS and the other trustee agencies.
