At approximately 0830, 12/29/2011, during a routine walk through by an Area Manager of Rochester Silver Works of Building 156 and discovered a liquid spill (later determined to be 40% Nitric Acid) within the building upon opening an overhead door. As he opened the door the acid leaked out of the building onto a concrete pad and onto soil adjacent to the building. Emergency Services were called and the spill was contained. Approximately 1700 gallons was spilled within the building with 233 gallons escaping the building. The spilled material within the building was collected and recycled into the company’s metals recovery process and the contaminated soils were collected for off-site disposal.
