National Response Center received a report of a train derailment in Sandstone, WV which resulted in injuries and a locomotive fire.  WVDEP requested EPA support due to concerns that four locomotives which had derailed could potentially discharge diesel into the New River. CSX reported diesel fuel and lubricating oil were released into the New River.

Sandstone, Hinton, Pipestem, Summers County, and Green Sulphur District Fire Department initially responded to the incident, along with Summers County EMS. The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, National Park Service, and USEPA are on scene.  CSX contractors are conducting response actions. The incident is located within the New River Gorge National Park.
