The Shohola PENNDOT Stockpile #6 Site (site) is a parcel of property located along Route 6 in Shohola, PA. The site is owned by the Pennsylvania Game Commission and previously operated by PENNDOT for storage of materials and vehicles. Local government representatives, a newspaper reporter, and an environmental group notified EPA of the report of buried waste at the site. Based on verbal reports and interviews by local officials, buried waste may include herbicides, binder oils, motor oils, antifreeze, lead road paint, paint thinner, metal debris, salt, tires, and/or agent orange defoliant. EPA was requested by these parties to assist in the investigation of the allegations of buried waste. PENNDOT performed a cleanup at the site identifying and disposing of various drums containing paints and oil, tires, metal debris, wooden guardrail posts, E3 solid oil blocks, and contaminated soil. No groundwater monitoring wells were installed during the cleanup and soils were not investigated beyond a depth of approximately 11 feet. The PA Game Commission has granted EPA access to perform additional investigation to determine whether current allegations of buried waste can be verified.
