At approximately noon on February 14, 2023, a large 30+ year-old
thermometer reported to contain mercury was broken in the basement of a private
residence in St. George, Utah. The mercury spilled onto a concrete floor and the resident noticed a strong chemical odor. The resident and contacted both local Poison Control and Utah Department of Environmental Quality (UDEQ).
The UDEQ formally requested EPA assistance on February 15, 2023. An EPA Response Team completed clean-up
on February 16 and demobilized on February 17, 2023. The mercury was
packaged and removed for proper disposal.
