New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (NE DES) has been working with the St Lawrence and Atlanic Railroad since April 2008 in an attempt to mitigate the release of cresote from railroad bridge ties into the Connecticut River.
Cresote has dripped off the railroad bridge into the river and onto the adjacent banks. The bridge spans the Connecticut River between North Stratford, NH and Bloomfield, VT.
On March 7, 2013 NH DES requested EPA assistance in working with the railroad to mitigate this ongoing release. The railroad replaced the railroad ties on the bridge and conduct soil excavation and wetland restoration as requried on both the New Hampshire and Vermont sides of the river.
This is a RP lead removal action and will be conducted under New Hampshire enforcement authorities.
