The former US Fireworks facility operated as a pyrotechnics manufacturing facility from approximately 1920 to 1941. The facility located at 3175 Johnson Avenue, consisted of numerous buildings and covered a total site area of approximately 38 acres. The present day 3175 Johnson Avenue commercial lot is occupied by a lumber distribution company, on a land area of 9.90 acres. The remainder of the former facility (approximately 28 acres) is currently occupied by residential single-family lots and cluster-style condo/apartment lots.

Potential constituents of concern related to historic firework manufacturing include heavy metals, such as lead and arsenic. The EPA Superfund Remedial Program and the Tennessee Department of Environment & Conservation (TDEC) are conducting remedial investigation activities for the Site. Recent residential soil sampling conducted by TDEC identified elevated arsenic levels in a yard, and TDEC has requested EPA conduct a Removal Site Evaluation to determine if a removal action is warranted.
