On May 26, 2011 at 1:10pm Central time, a representative from the Wolverine Pipeline Company reported a release, to the National Response Center, of petroleum product (suspected diesel or gasoline) at their pipeline in Monee, IL. The release was discovered that day by a Wolverine employee inspecting the line and noticed dead vegetation. The site is located in a rural business/residential area next to a pet cemetery. The closest residence is about 1/8 mile north and south of the site. EPA OSC and START contractor responded immediately and was onsite that afternoon and through the night overseeing the investigation to find of the source of the leak and cleanup. The volume released is unknown at this time. The release from the pipeline if not addressed, threatens to enter an unnamed creek and impact Monee Reservoir about 2 miles south. The Monee Fire Chief has requested USEPA to oversee the cleanup in coordination with the Illinois EPA, and the Department of Transportation Pipeline Hazardous Materials Safety Administration.
