On Sunday, October 26, 2008, a tanker truck overturned on the exit ramp off the New York State Thruway (I-90) at Amsterdam. Approximately 10,000 gallons of #2 heating oil was spilled onto the ground, with approx. 200 gallons of product migrating into the adjacent Mohawk River, a major interstate, navigable waterway.
Representatives of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and the trucking company are on-scene and remediating the spill. NYSDEC has requested EPA presence during this phase of remedial operations.
OSC Jeff Bechtel with the EPA's Edison Field Office is at the scene monitoring the cleanup effort.
