Received call from NJDEP-BER this morning regarding a Truck Trailer that was found at the intersection of Bay View and Garfield Avenue in Jersey City that contained solid and hazardous waste. The City code enforcement office personnel discovered the trailer that was open at the time they were passing by in their vehicle on their way to an appointment. Once determined that there was a mixture of both soild and hazardous waste, they contacted the city Fire Department who later called the NJDEP.
The NJDEP- BER responded early this morning and decided to contact EPA for assistance. The NJDAG office is investigating ownership of the trailer and its contents. The 42’ trailer was filled from front to back with debris and hazardous substances including solvents and cleaning agents. Alcohol, Acetone, and MEK are among the several hundred small, consumer sized containers found mixed in with the debris and other solid waste. The NJDEP in an initial effort to remove the threat from the public domain activated their spills clean-up contractor and had the trailer moved to Ken’s Marine Terminal in Bayonne for further processing the material.
EPA will assist the NJDEP conduct further investigations into the ownership of these wastes.. EPA will obtain proper disposal of these materials. The NJ DJAG office is currently conducting an investigation into the ownership of the trailer and it’s contents. The trailer was found alongside two other trailers at a vacant lot identified as 6 Bayview Avenue. Jesery City ,NJ
