The Battery Reclamation, Inc. (BRI) Site is located in Pecos, Reeves County, Texas. The BRI site is an inactive and abandoned battery reclamation and recycling facility that was referred by the State of Texas (TCEQ) to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 6 Prevention and Response Branch for cleanup.

EPA PRB conducted a Removal Assessment at the Site in 2008 and documented several thousand cubic yards of both processed and unprocessed batteries of all types that are being stored in an unsafe manner at the site. Many of the processed batteries which are in powder form are being stored outside and the containers have opened exposing the material to the elements. There are a minimum of 6 waste streams at the site that have been documented as “hazardous” per the RCRA regulations for both cadmium and mercury.

Phase I of the Removal Action which is expected to last 8 weeks will begin in August and will consist of transporting and disposing/recycling of the hazardous ZnMn powder and other high hazard materials at the site.
