On April 1st, 2014, a large fire occurred at the Brittain & Sons Recycling facility located at 2021 West County Road 0 North/South, Frankfort, Clinton County, Indiana. The facility is located west, and predominantly upwind of, Frankfort. The fire resulted in a large black smoke plume blowing east towards downtown Frankfort. Frankfort Fire Department and Clinton County Health Department responded. A shelter-in-place order was issued for affected areas downwind, including Suncrest Elementary School.

The Indiana Department of Environmental Management responded to the fire location, made a report to the National Response Center (NRC#1078467) and requested EPA air monitoring support for local fire and health officials.
