EPA OSC Spurlin and START responded to Waverly, Union County, KY at the request of KyDEP. KyDEP is requesting EPA assist in incident involving the release of 250,000 gals of coal slurry to Casey Creek and Highland Creek, a tributary of the Ohio River. The release occured when a 8" buried transfer line ruptured on 6/20/08. KyDEP reported observation of small number of dead fish at creek. An estimated 8 miles of waterway was impacted by the release. OSC responded to assist with water/sediment sampling at creek and provide technical support to KyDEP and the responsible party, the Patriot Coal Company.
