Caswell, Strauss & Company, Inc. operated a lead smelter on the Site from the mid 1940s until the late 1950s. Sometime in the 1950s, Caswell, Strauss & Company, Inc. ceased operations. The property was sold by Caswell, Strauss & Company, Inc. to a private individual on November 16, 1959. Based on historical records, it appears that the property was sub-divided by the new property owner into two large parcels. The northern parcel was sold to a developer in July 1970 who then sub-divided the land into ten individual lots and constructed residential single family dwellings as part of the Hilltop Estates South subdivision on Hilltop Road. In August 1971 these lots were sold to individual property owners as single family homes situated on approximately 0.5 acre lots.
The southern portion of the Caswell, Strauss & Company, Inc. property consists of two separate parcels that have been used for commercial/industrial purposes since the 1980s. The smaller parcel located at 1670 Oak Tree Road (Block 546-I, Lot 38-A) currently consists of a large building that houses a three unit strip mall. The property is mostly covered with the building and an asphalt parking area with a small portion of the property along the perimeter covered with landscaping. According to historical aerial photos, this property appears to have housed one of the former Caswell, Strauss & Company, Inc. buildings which operated at the Site. This area was converted into a bus storage depot during the 1960s and 1970s.
The larger parcel located at 1660 Oak Tree Road (Block 546-I, Lot 39-A) covers 4.65 acres of land and is occupied by a self-storage facility. In January 1981, a ten building self-storage unit business was constructed at this location. Prior to the construction of the self-storage facility, the property had been partially used as a bus storage depot.
The commercial property located at 1680 Oak Tree Road is currently a vacant lot and is immediately adjacent to the property previously owned by Caswell, Strauss & Company, Inc. The property had previously been utilized by the owner as an acetylene manufacturing plant and was in operation when Caswell, Strauss & Company, Inc. was operating.
Historical aerial photos and chain of title confirm that the original footprint of the property owned by the former lead smelter includes land that is currently occupied by ten residential dwellings located along Hilltop Road and the two commercial properties located at 1660 and 1670 Oak Tree Road
