EPA has been asked to investigate the presence of perchloroethylene in groundwater and soil in the vicinity of Chillum, MD and Washington, DC. Perchloroethylene, also known as PERC, tetrachloroethylene, tetrachloroethene, and PCE, was discovered during an underground storage tank leak spill cleanup involving gasoline at a property adjacent to the PERC site. The site under investigation includes several dry cleaning facilities and a residential community in the Lammont-Riggs Park section of Washington, DC. The dry cleaning facilities are located in Maryland and are immediately adjacent to the Washington, DC border. Groundwater flows approximately south from Maryland into Washington, DC.

This website will serve as a conduit for information to the public on the ongoing EPA investigation of PERC in sub-surface soil in Chillum, MD and Lamont Riggs Park area of Washington, DC. A factsheet has been included on this website as well as the Chillum Gas website to update the residents of findings at the Riggs Plaza Shopping Center.

The analytical results for indoor air and soil vapor sampling conducted during the month of Aril 2004 has been added to the documents section of this website. Perc Groundwater maps showing results from samples collected from wells during the period of May 2004 thruogh August 2004 have also been included to the documents section of this website.
