On March 9, 2009, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MDNR) requested assistance from EPA concerning a diesel fuel spill that threatened the Chariton River. A relatively new above ground storage tank had apparently settled due to heavy rains causing a pipe to fracture releasing almost all of the tanks’ 7,000-gallon capacity. A contractor was secured to assist with the cleanup with MDNR remaining on scene to document recovery of the material.
By March 16, 2009, the contractor had recovered 15,000 gallons of water that had an oil sheen (that material was treated at the Macon County Municipal Waste Department), 5,300 gallons of diesel water mixture (that was transported to Caseyville, Illinois, for disposal), and two 40-cubic-yard roll off boxes of contaminated boom and sorbent material (Violia Environmental Services for landfill disposal).
Soil samples were collected in May and the results reviewed by MDNR. The results were below the Missouri Risk Based Corrective Action Levels.
