ATSDR referred a resident to the emergency response program for potential response actions. The resident, who lives in Ferriday, Concordia Parish, LA, inherited the residence from a deceased relative. The relative operated a dental clinic in a building attached to the residence, making amalgam with mercury.
The current resident estimates approximately 40-50 pounds of mercury in bottles in the house, as well as amalgams in the house and attached clinic, as well as an x-ray machine in the clinic area. START personnel from Baton Rouge will deploy to the house tomorrow to assess the current indoor conditions with a Lumex monitor.
LDEQ will deploy radiation permitting personnel to assess the x-ray machine, as it is permitted by LDEQ. START personnel will work with LDEQ on potential options for removing the bottled mercury from the residence and clinic.
