At approximately 9:45am local time on 10/21/19 , EPA received notification of a field-wide power outage at Flow Station 3 resulting in a discharge of produced water (containing petroleum) to the tundra. By mid afternoon the source had since been secured and quantity of petroleum discharged has been estimated to be on the scale of approximately 10,000 gallons, although it is not yet clear how much of this volume breached containment and reached tundra. Spill responders conducted an initial assessment of the discharge on 10/21. A UAV (drone) with infrared technology was deployed to perform an overflight in order to assist in characterizing the extent of the spill. BP, who owns the facility, activated an Incident Management Team and BP together with ADEC and EPA established Unified Command to begin oversight of cleanup operations.
