On May 6, 2003, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requested EPA assistance with gasoline found seeping from a river bank into the South Yamhill River near Fort Hill, Oregon. It was determined that the source was a small but likely long-term leak in a section of buried pipe running from a 1000 gallon tank to a gasoline pump in shed on a small business property. The source was about 75 yards from the river. The owner has replaced the pipe with an above-ground section. Wells were installed to intercept the gasoline remaining in the ground. Booms and pads were also set out to catch fuel. It is thought that the seep was provoked by heavy rains which raised the water table sufficiently enough to catch and move the fuel.
