On October 11, The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) requested EPA assistance in responding to a mercury incident at the Garden Terrace Apartments located in Tampa, Florida. According to FDEP response personnel, two children were admitted to the hospital as a result of the exposure. Federal On-Scene Coordinator (FOSC) Kevin Eichinger deployed to the incident accompanied by Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) and Emergency and Rapid Response Services (ERRS) contractors to assist in the assessment, oversight, and remediation of the dwelling. ERRS contractors secured temporary lodging for the six residents displaced by the mercury spill. On October 12, OSC Eichinger and START contractors assessed the unit and determined that emergency actions were required.
