At 07:51 hours on March 11, 2010, a report (#933591) was phoned into the National Response Center (NRC) of a release of 25,000 gallons of No. 2 diesel to secondary containment at the Gladieux Trading & Marketing facility located at 4757 N. US Highway 24 East in Hungtington, Huntington County, Indiana. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) is responding to the spill but has requested the presence of the U.S. EPA due to the size of the spill. OSC Lam responded to the request and is working with IDEM to conduct oversight.
The Site is a bulk fuel refinery located approximately 1700 feet north of the Little Wabash River. At 03:13, the facility operators began transferring diesel fuel from Tank 501 into Tank 510. Tank 510 overflowed for approximately 3 hours before being shut down. Product breached secondary containment, but appears to be contained on-site. Gladieux operators, the Huntington Fire Department (HFD), and Huntington Emergency Management Agency (EMA) have began product recovery. Gladieux has estimated that 230,000 gallons of diesel were released, 150,000 gallons of which have been recovered. Recovered product is being placed back into the facility's feed tank for refining.
OSC Lam is working with IDEM to monitor both the Little Wabash River and Wabash River for the presence of product. At this time, no product has been observed in either river.
