The Gulf Nuclear Site is located just beyond the city limits of Odessa, Texas in Ector County. It is an abandoned radioactive materials processing and waste shipment storage facility. It is located in an unzoned mixed residential-commercial-light industrial area. When the Corporation went bankrupt, they walked off leaving several radioactive sources and tons of radioactive waste and contaminated material. Radionuclides found on the site include Cobalt-60, Cesium-137, Radium-226, Americium-241, and several others. The activity of a single Americium-Berylium source (neutron) is 3 Curies. The material left on the Site includes large manipulator arms, pigs, handtools, shiping containers, 8,000 pounds of lead shot, etc.
EPA will remove the radioactive sources, the contaminated wastes and material, demolish the building and excavate a limited about of contaminated soil.
