EPA coordinated with the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (RIDEM) to address environmental contamination present at the Hartford Avenue Gravel Pits Site (the "Site") in Johnston, Rhode Island. The City of Providence completed the Removal Action at the Site on October 24, 2006 under the oversight of RIDEM. The cleanup addressed lead contamination in surface soils, containers of potentially ignitable chemicals (paints and aerosols), and asbestos-containing floor tiles identified during an EPA investigation of the property in June 2004. The property is owned by the City of Providence and operated by the Providence Water Supply Board as protected land for its watershed.
