The Hazel Court Enterprises Site is also known as the former Eppinger Russell and/or Bernuth Lembcke Site. The Site is located adjacent to the Elizabeth River. Historically, the Site was used to store and distribute creosote. The Site is currently being used as a truck storage and maintenance area.
EPA was requested by the City of Chesapeake Fire Department to perform a removal assessment. An assessment performed in 2005 revealed the presence of heavy creosote in tanks and soils as well as drums and small containers of hazardous substances scattered along the Site.
Removal actions in 2006 focused on the removal of 4 vertical tanks, two additional tank bottoms filled with creosote, and the excavation of contaminated soils.
Actions in 2007 are focusing on removal of contaminated sediments from a stream which empties directly into the Elizabeth River and disposal of the soils excavated in 2007.
The Site is one of several properties along the Elizabeth River undergoing revitalization.
