During the mid-morning hours on 01 March 2017 Idaho State Communications Center notified EPA Region 10 duty officer of an oil spill, estimated at 100 – 500 gallons, in a storm water ditch to the south of Hwy 25 near Hazelton, Jerome County, Idaho. A private citizen initially noticed and reported the spill to the Idaho State Patrol. There were no witnesses to the source of the spill and it is believed to be a “midnight dumper.” The storm water ditch flows to an irrigation ditch system that eventually flows to the Wilson Lake Reservoir and then to the Snake river. The oil was contained within this ditch however weather and snowmelt in the area could have mobilize it in the future.
