In late July 2009, NC DENR requested EPA Reg 4 assistance with assessing several contaminated drinking water wells around the Charlotte, NC area. ERRB Reg 4 began assessing twelve sites in a five county area and obtained access agreements from potentially contaminated homes around each of these sites.
One site was the former Gastonia Industrial Trucking site along Hemphill Road in Gastonia, NC. The previous owner of this property allegedly dumped drum waste and cleaned drums for recycling which resulted in contaminating several water wells with TCE (trichloroethylene). The current business owner operates a forklift repair service and does not use chlorinated solvents in his operation.
