On March 25, 2014, EPA received a call from Missouri Department of Natural Resources requesting assistance on a mercury spill located near 3009 Venus Ave, Independence, Missouri.
The Independence Fire Department was on scene and had blocked off a street where mercury was found spilled in the roadway. It appeared that a jar of mercury had been broken in the street.

An EPA On Scene Coordinator (OSC) responded with a START contractor to the scene along with an MDNR State On Scene Coordinator (SOSC). A mercury vaccum was used to clean up the area where mercury beads were found. Approximately 13 pounds of mercury was recovered. MDNR assisted with disposal of mercury and debris.
