At 0700, a truck carrying blasting caps, boosters and sodium perchlorate was involved in an accident on Interstate 85 near Highpoint, Randolph County, NC. The truck lost its load shutting down I-85 and resulting in an evacuation. An OSC was dispatched from the Highpoint Vermiculite site to coordinate with local officials and the North Carolina Emergency Management Agency Area Coordinator. The blasting caps and boosters were removed from the truck and sodium perchlorate was placed on a trailer to be transported and recovered by approximately 1500. Interstate 85 was reopened and the evacuation ended soon thereafter. Only diesel fuel from the truck's saddle tanks was released. Follow-on clean-up by the trucking company with oversite provided by North Carolina is planned.
