The former Kiser Plating is located at 401 E. Howard Street in Muncie, Delaware County, Indiana. It is near downtown Muncie. Site coordinates are latitude 40.189845 north and longitude 85.382973 west. Areas surrounding the site have been redeveloped for residential land use. Land use in the area consists of a mix of residential, commercial and former/current industrial properties. Approximately 6,000 people live within one mile of Kiser Plating.
The property has been used for industrial purposes since 1887. The Muncie Heat and Light Company occupied the site in 1896, and the Kiser Corporation began plating operations at the property prior to 1911 and remained on site until 1999. A fire destroyed all buildings but one in 2001.
EPA conducted a Site Assessment in November 2012 at the request of the City of Muncie. Analytical results indicated elevated concentrations of cadmium and trichloroethene (TCE) in near-surface soil. Chlorinated solvents were detected in soil gas samples at a maximum concentration of 82,000 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) for TCE and 120,000 ppbv for trans-1,2-dichloroethene (DCE).
