Lynchburg Crude Oil Train Derailment

 

On 4/30/13, at approximately 2:30 pm, a CSX freight train derailed in downtown Lynchburg, Virginia. Sixteen cars derailed, three of which derailed onto the banks of the James River. The derailment caused a large fire

All 16 cars were transporting Bakken crude oil. Of the three cars which derailed, One completely lost its contents, which then caught fire. The amount of oil in this car is estimated at 29,600 gallons.

NTSB performed an on scene investigation.
