On the evening of January 2, 2021, EPA received a NRC report (#1295390) of a pint of mercury spilled in a residence in McCracken, Rush County, Kansas. The responsible party conducted an initial cleanup with technical assistance from Poison Control. The responsible party had visitors at their home at the time of the spill including what EPA considers potentially sensitive populations. On January 3rd, EPA mobilized an OSC to conduct screening of the responsible party's residence and other potentially effected locations and items.
Mercury vapor screening and removal of elemental mercury and mercury impacted media will continue. After removal of all visible elemental mercury and identified mercury impacted media from the residence, confirmation sampling will begin.
