On Wednesday, April 21, 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 7 Duty Officer received a call from the Kansas City Fire Department requesting assistance for a mercury spill in Kansas City, Missouri. The spill occurred at Hickman Mills High School, 9010 Old Santa Fe Road, Kansas City, Missouri. The release was from an 18-24" barometer inside a storage room. Students attended classes at an alternate location on Thursday, April 22.

The Hickman Mills School District has hired a contractor, Haz-Mat Response, Inc., for the cleanup. OSCs Schuette and Ferguson deployed the afternoon of April 21 to provide air monitoring assistance and oversight.
