The subject site is an island in the Ohio River near Boaz, Wood County, WV. The island is part of the Ohio River Islands NWR. Numerous abandoned oil wells are spotted by WVDEP and USFWS on the island and in the waters adjacent to the island. Some wells along the western bank are now in the Ohio River due to erosion of the island. Some of these wells were found to be leaking. The WVDEP and USFWS have requested assistance from the OSC to assess the situation.
