Newton Ave VI is a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) removal site evaluation for vapor intrusion, an environmental problem where underground chemical gases can seep into buildings causing hazardous indoor air pollution. EPA conducted an investigation around the intersection of South Rural Street and Newton Avenue, Indianapolis, Marion County, Indiana.
Industrial fans were manufactured at 2802 Newton Avenue from approximately 1921 until 1985. Environmental investigations were conducted by private parties at 2802 Newton Avenue from 2016 to 2018. These investigations documented volatile organic compounds (VOC) in sub-surface soil and water. For more information on these investigations, search for documents at the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) Virtual File Cabinet (VFC) at: https://vfc.idem.in.gov. In 2018, the city of Indianapolis requested assistance from EPA to investigate the potential for VOC vapor intrusion from 2802 Newton Ave into residential and other properties nearby. EPA conducted an assessment for vapor intrusion and collected water samples from permanent groundwater monitoring wells already at the site; conducted additional soil borings for the collection of samples; collected soil gas samples; and conducted laboratory analysis for VOCs. The investigation determined VOCs in the sub-surface at 2802 Newton Avenue were not affecting nearby residences or other buildings. For more information, see the Documents section of this website.
