The Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (VDEQ) has requested assistance from the USEPA in addressing lead contamination at the Oceana Salvage Yard (The Site). Historically, the salvage yard engaged in battery collection, cracking, and lead recovery operations. Wastes from these operations were stored and disposed of improperly on the property.
In January of 2006, USEPA sampled surface soil, surface water, sediments, and a non-potable ground water well located in the site. USEPA also sampled a potable water well at the Trav-L-Park. The latter well is located .25 miles from the salvage yard.
Sampling results show soil lead concentrations are significantly above 1,000 parts per million (ppm)—the EPA lead concentration in soils screening level for a non-residential site—along the southern portion of the property and in both disposal piles on the property. Both the potable water and non potable well sample results were within the acceptable EPA drinking water standard range for lead.
The property owner has agreed to address the piles of contaminated soils that were left on site after previous incomplete cleanups.
