The Ohio National Acme Site is an abandoned, industrial manufacturing/warehouse property located at 170 East 131st Street, Cleveland, Cuyahoga County, Ohio.
The Site was historically used as a machine and tool manufacturing facility and later as a warehouse. Friable asbestos is present inside and outside of the Site building. Due to improper demolition practices, the building is open to the environment.
The Site encompasses approximately 14-acres and included a 570,000 square foot building constructed in 1917 by the National Acme Company. The facility was used for manufacturing purposes for nearly a century. The property is currently abandoned and in a state of disrepair. Thousands of cubic yards of municipal waste were illegally dumped inside the building and on the property.
The property building has been condemned by the City and large portions of the building were demolished in the summer of 2012. No demolition permits were issued by the City prior to demolition activities taking place. In addition, the demolition contractor provided no evidence to the City that an asbestos survey or asbestos abatement activities were conducted prior to the start of the demolition activities.
The City of Cleveland referred the Site to EPA to conduct a removal assessment and abate environmental and human health threats resulting from abandoned hazardous substances on the property.
