**************EXERCISE EXERCISE EXERCISE****************

During November 29 to December 2, 2005 the EPA participated in a international exercise at the request of the Mexican government on behalf Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente (PROFEPA) and Protección Civil. This exercise was to improve coordination and communication in the event of a Hazardous Material spill along the US / Mexico border that could affect both international communities.

Planning for this event was between the sister cities of Brownsville, Texas / Matamoros, Tamaulipas on the local level, Texas / Tamaulipas on the state level, and PROFEPA / Protecction Civil / EPA on the federal level during the possible threat of a terrorist incident involving a hazardous material.

The week long event consisted of training courses offered to the first responders (Fire, EMS, Police, Public Health, and Public Works) each day leading up to the Friday when the Field Exercise will take place.

EPA hosted training in Incident Command System, Hazardous Materials Awareness, and Weapons of Mass Destruction response in Spanish with English translation in the City of Matamoros, Tamaulipas Mexico.
