Late on 16 October 2014, EPA Region 10 was notified by the Washington Department of Ecology (Ecology) that they were working with the City of Pacific Police and Fire Departments to investigate the report of a large quantity of chemical containers being found in a commercial storage locker in Pacific, Washington. The storage locker owner was apparently notified of an unusual smell from liquid leaking from the storage locker, which prompted a 911 notification. Upon arriving to the site, the City of Pacific’s first responders requested Ecology’s support once they viewed nearly 1000 containers of fertilizers, pesticides, and other chemicals piled up inside the locker. OSC Smith will be responding this morning with START and ERRS contractors to form Unified Command with Ecology and the City of Pacific. CID has been notified and is also monitoring the investigation.
