At approximately 1500hrs on 4/30/04, EPA EPRB received notification of a late morning chlorine gas release that had occurred at the Putney Paper Co., in Putney, VT. The release occurred when a low pH material was delivered into a 9,000 gallon tank containing 3,000 gallons Sodium Hypochlorite. The facility has been evacuated and there is a 1/2 mile evacuation of residents and route 5 is closed. OSC Wainberg and two START personnel were mobilized to the scene.
