At approximately 0930 hours today the REOC received notification from the USCG-San Juan regarding an inland Diesel spill from the basement of the Quantum Metro Center, a condo ton Chardon Avenue in San Juan; the Diesel got into a tributary of the San Juan Bay. A maintenance company was servicing a stand-by generator and somehow the Diesel was released into a contained area (basement?). However, instead of absorbing the fuel the worker used a hose to push the fuel outside the building and it entered a storm drain that leads to a creek that feeds into the San Juan Bay. The initial report is that 100 – 300 gallons were released and possibly 100 gallons reached a navigable waterway. The condo association has hired a remediation contractor who is on the scene.

OSC Garrison has been in contact with the USCG and they have requested that EPA take over responding to the spill. OSC Garrison is en route to the scene with an EPA contractor to monitor the contractor and document remediation activities.
