The Overland Park Fire Department HazMat Team contacted EPA's emergency response spill line on August 4, 2021 to request assistance with an
over pressured refrigerant cylinder.
The fire department's initial screening showed it was positive for halogens and requested assistance from EPA Region 7 to properly dispose of the abandoned pressurized refrigerant cylinder.
The EPA On-Scene Coordinator
(OSC) contacted the Kansas Department of Health & Environment (KDHE) and confirmed that
the state does not have the capacity to assist with disposal of the cylinder.
On August 11, 2021, EPA OSC's James Johnson & Brianne Grant oversaw EPA's contractor (Rapid Recovery) retrieve the cylinder and arranged disposal.
