In the 1980s, lead containing waste was generated during Rockwool Industries fiber insulation manufacturing process. These wastes were burried on site and were determined to contain up to 100,000 mg/kg of lead. The current owner of the site and the owner at the time of disposal of the wastes entered into an agreement with the EPA to ensure the waste, buried under approximately three feet of native soil, remained undisturbed.
Several actions were taken to prevent expsosure to the contaminated sub-surface soils. First, a fence with warning signs was constructed around the area where the wastes were burried. Additionally, an Environmental Covenant was implemented to prevent digging in the area of contaminated sub-surface soils.
Execution of these protective measures began December 22, 2010. The fence and warning signs were completed January 6, 2011. Also, the Environmental Coventant has been signed by all affected parties and has was certified July 15, 2011. The final site walk was performed by OSC Ferguson and Section Chief Don Lininger on December 21, 2011.
