An individual mowing a field, struck an abandoned oil well casing, in turn, the casing was damaged and fifteen (15) barrels of oil were released. KYDEP/ERT responded to the scene and placed hay bales and other absorbent materials around the release to help prevent the oil from reaching the nearby Town Branch (a tributary of the Green River, which is a tributary of the Ohio River). EPA Phone Duty provided the KYDEP with a PRFA (Pollution Removal Funding Authorization) to hire a contractor to contain and remove the oil. The Kentucky Oil and Gas Board will hire a contractor to properly close the abandoned well. Phone Duty is monitoring the on-going operation.
