On 10/22/05 at 7:15 am MT, near milepost 3999 on Highway 20 in Freemont County, Idaho, a tank truck and pup trailer owned by Sanchez Trucking Company, and carrying approximatley 12,000 gallons of Magnesium Chloride (liquid de-icer) overturned. Both containers were breached, as were the 2 saddle tanks containing approximately 200 gallons of diesel. The accident occured adjacent to a wetland and about 20 yards from the Henry's Fork, outlet to Henry's Lake. Approximately 2/3 of the de-icer was lost (8,000 gallons) and approximately 150 gallons of diesel. OSC Weigel was dispatched because the status of the situation was not clear, and because of the potential environmental impact to the Henry's Fork. Weigel arrived on site evening of 10/22, and met with Idaho DEQ and the RP's contractor, Rocky Mountain Environmental (RME). Weigel observed that petroleum contaminated soils (PCS) had largely been cleaned up, and that DEQ and RME had in place a suitable plan to address the remaining PCS and subsequent site monitoring. Weigel got a hotel for the night and returned to Boise the following day
