On July 1st, 2015 Tacoma Fire Department requested EPA support air monitoring areas near a fire at a metal recycling facility. EPA deployed an OSC and START contractors to support the fire department.


EPA ALOHA model generated to reflect contaminate plume path and impacted area with given wind speed and direction at site. Tacoma Fire Department delivers main stream to control fire source location while a Schnitzer grappling hook excavator moves debris to locate hot spots. Tacoma Fire Department placement along Marine View Drive approximately three ladder trucks average on site, one of which constantly applying water to fire source scrap pile. EPA and START contractor conducting air monitoring at breathing zone at exterior perimeter of site Steel scrap metal pile at location of fire. Pile dominated by compressed motor vehicles. START contractor monitoring air at breathing level downwind of the fire location at breathing zone. Schnitzer grapple hook excavator systematically moving material in search of any remaining hot spots.
